AUTOMOTIVE ARTIST BARRY ROWE COMMISSIOINED TO CREATE 2010 PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS TOUR POSTER
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – August 2, 2010 - Automotive Fine Arts Society member Barry Rowe was commissioned by the Pebble Beach Company for the ninth time to create the official artwork for the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance. The Tour will be on August 12, 2010, and the poster will be distributed at the event. As a member of AFAS, Rowe has been involved with this magnificent automotive and social event since 1998, creating posters for the Concours and the Pebble Beach Tours. Sponsored by Audi of America, the show on the 18th fairway of the Lodge at Pebble Beach will include automotive subjects in a variety of mediums including watercolors, acrylics, oils, wood and various metals.
This year's official Tour poster features a Ferrari 250 GT SWB motoring along the tour course with the iconic Bixby Bridge of Big Sur, Calif. in the background. The structure is one of the world's highest single-span concrete arch bridges at 260 feet high and 700 feet long. The poster also showcases three sketches of the vintage Ferrari in different angles at speed.
"I'm honored to be chosen to create this year's official artwork for the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance," said Rowe. "I wanted to depict a romantic moment with the famous bridge, trees and beach in the background of this fabulous Ferrari. It's one of the most beautiful roads in the world, and I believe it was imperative to capture it in print for all to enjoy."
In addition to this year's Tour poster, Rowe painted the art featured on the AFAS cocktail party invitations, which illustrates a 1939 Horch and Audi's latest A8, bridging the company's past and present. This painting will be displayed at the Saturday evening event. Audi will give the original art away as a prize to one of the guests attending the reception.
A native of England, Rowe studied graphic design at the College of Art in Coventry. He worked for several years as an art director in the advertising field before becoming a freelance artist in 1966 in order to pursue his passion for painting automobiles.
His career as a painter began when he won the Sotheby's Art Award for his portrait of five times world champion Juan Fangio. This led to commissions from Louis Vuitton of Paris, Royal Mail, Royal Doulton and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines where his art lines the walls of their cruise ships. In additional to his many poster commissions, Rowe has captured seven "Awards of Excellence" and the "Lincoln Award" in 2006 as part of the annual AFAS exhibit during the Pebble Beach Concours.
As well as being a talented artist, Rowe is also a genuine enthusiast. One of his favorite childhood activities was to ride his bicycle to the Jaguar factory and watch the famous "C" and "D-Type" race cars being built. He is an avid Formula One and vintage racing fan, which takes him to some of the most famous European venues each year. Over the years he has owned many interesting cars himself with his favorites being a 1931 supercharged Lagonda, a Riley Nine Tourer from 1929 and a modern Morgan. He currently resides only three miles from Aston Martin's headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England.
Fascinated with the expression of light and atmosphere, Barry almost always includes people in his automotive paintings, treating his pictures as art rather than mere illustrations of cars. Paintings from Rowe's impressive career can also be enjoyed in the gold medal award winning book, "Atmosphere and Light: The Paintings of Barry Rowe."
